San Francisco's oldest comedy club and a launching pad for legends
The Punch Line has been running since 1978, making it San Francisco's oldest comedy club — and one of the most important rooms in stand-up history. Robin Williams honed his act here in the club's earliest years, and Dana Carvey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Margaret Cho all came up through its stage.
It is an intimate room in the classic mold: low stage, close seating, and a crowd right on top of the comic. Headliners love it for exactly that reason, and the club's Sunday showcase has been a proving ground for Bay Area comedy for decades.
When the club's future was threatened by a lease dispute in 2019, comedians — most vocally Dave Chappelle — rallied to save it, and the Punch Line kept its doors open. It remains the essential San Francisco comedy experience.
