The Sunset Strip institution where modern stand-up grew up
The Comedy Store opened in 1972 in the former Ciro's nightclub on the Sunset Strip, and under Mitzi Shore's decades of ownership it became the proving ground of modern stand-up. Richard Pryor worked out material here; David Letterman and Jay Leno came up through its lineups; Sam Kinison was invented on its stages. The names painted on the club's black walls read as a history of the art form.
The Store runs three rooms — the Original Room, the larger Main Room, and the intimate Belly Room — with lineup shows nearly every night. Its culture of "made" paid regulars means the nightly bills are stacked with strong working comics, and major names still drop in unannounced. The club's history got the full documentary treatment in Showtime's 2020 series "The Comedy Store," and Kill Tony taped here for years before relocating to Austin.
